Edwin Van Der Sar is a thirty seven year old Dutch goal keeper, who also wears the number one shirt for Manchester United. He has played over five hundred competitive games in his professional career. His long career has won him twenty three major awards in a variety of competitions.
Edwin Van Der Sar started his playing career at youth level with the Dutch team Ajax and later joining their adult team. While at Ajax Amsterdam, he enjoyed winning both the UEFA Cup and the Champions League, as well as the European Goal Keeping Award in 1995.
The thirty seven year old then joined Juventus, where he made sixty six appearances before eventually losing his place to the World’s most expensive goal keeper, Buffon. This event meant that Fulham could snap up Van der Sar for just seven million pounds, which, considering his ability, is a bargain.
A successful career at Fulham, which included one hundred and twenty six appearances in four years, led to him being spotted by Manchester United, who were looking for a goal keeper who could live up to the spot left by Peter Schmeichel. The transfer went ahead for an undisclosed fee, although the price was assumed to be around two million pounds.
Edwin Van Der Sar has enjoyed three successful years at Manchester United, and has reported that he will leave the club after the 2008-09 season, but it is uncertain whether he will retire or switch to another club. While at the Red Devils, he has won ninety nine caps, and has helped United win two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a Champions League final and the Community Shield.
Van Der Sar’s international career has been extremely impressive, too. He was included in the 1994 World Cup squad, but didn’t make his first appearance for his native country until June 1995. His fourteen year long campaign has included one hundred and twenty eight caps, making him the most capped Dutch player of all time. Edwin Van Der Sar has recently been plaed as the captain of his country, and he has been described as many as one of the best Dutch goal keepers ever, but his inspirational international career has now ended, announcing that he would retire after the Netherlands Euro 2008 campaign was over, and after their loss to Russia in the quarter finals, it now is.
