Owen Lee Hargreaves is a twenty seven year old midfielder, who wears the number four shirt for Manchester United. He was originally born in Canada. Owen Hargreaves’ favourite position is as a holding midfielder, but he has played in many different positions successfully, including right back.
After playing for his local team, Calgary Foothills, Owen’s talent was recognized by many clubs, but Bayern Munich, the German team, snapped him up before any one else could, and Hargreaves spent ten years at the club, making nearly one hundred and fifty appearances and scored five goals.
In the 2006-07 season, Owen Hargreaves broke his leg, but his sensational performance in the World Cup in 2006 had ensured that several top clubs were interested in him, but Manchester United always looked the most likely to sign him, and they did just that on the first of July 2007, revealing his transfer on the ninth, but not disclosing the price they paid for him. The amount, however, is considered to be around the seventeen million pound mark. The transfer was described by many people as the longest running transfer saga football has ever seen.
Owen Hargreaves has had an extremely successful season at Manchester United, playing thirty four games and helping the ‘Red Devils’ to European Championships success. Hargreaves is considered to be one of the best midfielders in the Premiership at this time, supporting the defense while still providing the attackers with plenty of through balls, and Owen himself has scored two goals this season.
Owen Hargreaves’ international career has been just as successful as his club football. Hargreaves made his England debut at the age of nineteen, but making his full debut against the Netherlands in August 2001. In 2002 he was selected for the World Cup, but was incredibly unlucky and picked up an injury after just fifteen minutes of playing.
Hargreaves was picked for both Euro 2004 in Portugal and the 2006 World Cup, in both of which he played extremely well, and in the World Cup he was undoubtedly England’s best player, and was voted England Player of the Year in 2006 by visitors on the Football Association website, which proves just how popular he is with the English public. He also played in the recent Euro 2008 qualifiers, but neither him nor the England team as a whole could make an impact.
